What is Vision Correction?

It's observed that one out of four teens needs vision correction. The three most prevalent issues addressed in vision correction are nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Refractive surgery is the procedure used to correct vision. Radial Keratotomy (RK) was the first-ever incision refractive procedure. Various options are available for individuals who wear contact lenses or eyeglasses, providing alternatives that can reduce or eliminate the dependence on corrective lenses or glasses.

Vision Disorders

The shape of the eyeball is the underlying cause of a vision disorder. Refraction is the process where the eye lens bends light to focus an image onto the retina. If the eye is misshapen, it may not refract light correctly, leading to the image being in front of or behind the retina, or even having multiple focal points. The eye muscles and the natural shape of the eyes play a crucial role in the eye's ability to focus on an object more clearly.

Vision disorders can be corrected through LASIK surgery, which enables the eye to refract light properly, focusing the image precisely on the retina. LASIK also corrects the shape of the eye, contributing to improved vision.

Types of Vision Problems

Common childhood vision issues :

  • Lazy eye (amblyopia)
  • Blurred vision (refractive errors)
  • Crossed eyes (strabismus)

Common vision issues in adulthood :

  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Blurred vision
  • Cataract
  • Glaucoma
  • Age-related macular degeneration

Types of Vision Disorders

  • Myopia
  • Hyperopia
  • Astigmatism
  • Cataracts
  • Fuch’s Dystrophy
  • Dry Eye Syndrome
  • Amblyopia
  • Computer Vision Syndrome
  • Strabismus
  • Ocular Migraines
  • Herpes and the Eye
  • Keratoconus
  • Unequal Vision : Aniseikonia and Anisometropia
  • Age-Related Macular Degeneration
  • Epithelial and Stromal Dystrophies
  • Glaucoma

Laser Vision Correction

Referred to as refractive surgery, laser vision correction is a convenient procedure that restores normal vision for numerous patients. This surgery alters the cornea's shape to enhance vision. During laser surgeries, the cornea is reshaped to ensure proper focusing of light on the retina at the back of the eye. The two most prevalent laser vision correction methods are PRK and LASIK. LASIK (laser in-situ keratomileusis) is the most widely recognized procedure, addressing nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

Benefits of Laser Vision Correction

  • No stitches or bandages are required.
  • It provides a desired vision for the patients.
  • The vision can be corrected either on the next day of LASIK procedure or immediately.
  • The adjustments can be done years later to correct further vision after the LASIK procedure.
  • The procedure eliminates the dependence on contact lenses or eyeglasses.

Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) Vision Correction

This eye laser surgery is designed to address mild to moderate vision issues related to myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism. During this procedure, the cornea is reshaped using lasers, with the laser emitting ultraviolet light onto the corneal surface instead of penetrating beneath it. The surgery proves highly effective in rectifying nearsightedness and reduces or eliminates the need for corrective glasses.

Double Vision (Diplopia) Correction

Double vision, also known as diplopia, is the simultaneous projection of two images of a single object. The patient may experience constant or intermittent double vision, with the two images displaced diagonally, horizontally, or vertically. When both vertical and horizontal lines appear doubled, it is termed oblique separation or diagonal double displacement. There are two types of double vision: Monocular double vision occurs in one eye, while Binocular double vision affects both eyes.

Causes of Double Vision

Cornea Problems : Corneal issues typically lead to double vision in one eye. This phenomenon can arise from an abnormal surface of the eye, which distorts incoming light. Various factors can contribute to this damage, including :

  • Double vision can be due to dryness of the cornea.
  • Shingles or herpes zoster ate the cornea infections that may distort the cornea.
  • The corneal scars may change the cornea by creating double vision.

Muscle Problem : Smooth eye movement is hindered when the eye muscles of one eye are weak. Attempting to gaze in directions controlled by these weak muscles can lead to double vision. The weakness in the eye muscles may be attributed to several causes, such as :

  • Graves' disease is a thyroid condition that impacts the eye muscles, often leading to vertical diplopia. In this condition, one image of the object is positioned vertically above the other.
  • Myasthenia Gravis is an autoimmune illness that hinders the stimulation of nerve muscles in the head. The initial symptoms of this condition include ptosis, double vision, and drooping eyelids.

Brain Problems : All visual processes occur within the brain, with nerves controlling the eyes that connect directly to the brain. Double vision can develop in the brain due to various causes, including :

  • Migraine headaches
  • Increased pressure in the brain due to bleeding, infection or trauma.
  • Strokes
  • Brain tumors
  • Aneurysms

Lens Problem : Cataracts are the most common lens-related issue that can lead to double vision. When cataracts affect both eyes, the images perceived by each eye may become distorted, resulting in double vision.

Nerve Problems : Conditions that may damage the nerves controlling the eye muscles, leading to double vision, include :

  • Uncontrolled diabetes can cause nerve damage in one eye, leading to double vision and weakness in the eye.
  • Multiple sclerosis, a condition that can affect nerves throughout the spinal cord or brain, may result in damage leading to double vision.
  • Guillain-Barre syndrome, a nerve condition causing progressive weakness, can manifest initial symptoms in one eye, potentially leading to double vision.

Color Vision Correction

Objects can be distinguished based on the frequencies (wavelengths) of the light they reflect, transmit, or emit, a phenomenon known as color vision. The human eye perceives colors when the brain responds to stimuli produced by incoming light interacting with specific types of cone photoreceptors. The human eye can interpret the light source or an object in various ways. Symptoms of color vision problems include :

  • An individual with color vision deficiency may not perceive various shades of color compared to those who can see a wide spectrum of colors.
  • An individual with color vision deficiency may perceive only a limited range of colors, as opposed to the full spectrum visible to others.
  • An individual may perceive a variety of colors without being aware that their perception differs from that of others.
  • In rare cases, an individual may be limited to perceiving only white, gray, or black, lacking the ability to distinguish other colors.

Abnormal color vision issues can be corrected by using glasses with colored contact lenses.
